Interpreting Dreams

From my mailbag: August 9, 2009

I receive numerous requests to interpret dreams, and I try to answer each and every one of them. It’s important to remember that I really know very little about the person except what they write about their dreams. I can do so much more if I know something about the writer, the age, gender, occupation, family status, etc. Since almost all of the letters I receive ask me about the meaning of their dreams without any other information, whatever I write should not be taken as the only possible meaning. I do try and visualize the dreams as written to me and find a meaning for them. In all cases, I have changed the name of the writer to protect his/her privacy:
************************************************************************************************

“Dear Stephen: I have a nightmare about once a month. I am in a convertible car driving on a clear day. For some reason I am on a mountain road near Memphis and my steering wheel freezes. I go over the side of the road and am killed. When I wake up, I am covered with sweat. Can you help me get rid of this dream? Alex”

Dear Alex: You say that in your dreams you are killed. This is extremely rare. When we face death in our dreams we normally get a sharp sinking feeling that wakes us up. A car going over a cliff is not an uncommon way to die in a dream, and normally it represents a feeling of extreme insecurity. You are going someplace but you are afraid you’ll never get there. I will assume you either live near Memphis or did live near there when you were younger. The waking-up in a cold sweat is symptomatic of great anxiety: You are trying to get someplace (possibly an economic goal since you’re driving a convertible; a symbol of wealth and success) but you are afraid you will not be able to get there or you fear what may be at the end of the road. Dying seems less confrontational than continuing on the road until it ends. To get rid of this dream you will have to recognize what the goal is at the end of the road. When you do this, not only will goal seem easier to reach, but you may find you’re almost there. There are many things in life that you can’t control…including what may be at the end of the road you are travelling. If you take the time to analyze and think about it when you are awake, I believe the dream will no longer be a problem. Best of luck.

“Dear Stephen: I am ten weeks pregnant. I woke up this morning with a startle. In my dream my fiancé was leaving me for one of my ex friends. In my dream, he didn't even care that I was going to keep our son if he was leaving. What does this mean? Megan”

Dear Megan: As much as our “modern” world has accepted single parenthood or having a child without a legal mate, there is still somewhat of a stigma attached to it. While this stigma now rarely attaches to the child (being the child of an unmarried parent now seems to be socially accepted), the stigma still attaches to the mother. Our society and customs are imbued with religiously inspired laws and traditions that an unmarried mother still has to overcome. There is not only the economic problem of providing support for the child, but in many areas of America, the mother is still thought of as a wanton woman who should be forced to wear a scarlet “A” on her chest. As much as we have come to accept living-together as a normal thing for engaged couples, there is always the unconscious or hidden fear that the marriage will never happen; that the child will not have a legal father, etc. This is what your dream is expressing: that hidden fear. Granted that more than 50% of all marriages end in divorce, there is still a certain safety and comfort zone when a couple makes it legal. The fear of the possibility that the child’s father may walk-away and leave you and your child stranded is very real. Even if your fiancé has assured you of his intention to marry you, I would have a heart-to-heart with him. What you do with your life is for you to decide. But now, another person has been added to the equation and responsibilities will increase significantly. If you have that heart-to-heart with your fiancé, I believe your nightmare will disappear.

************************************************************************************************
“Dear Stephen: I have read your blogs about dreams and wondered if you can help. I keep dreaming about my dead aunt. I never met her when she was alive but I’ve seen pictures of her. In my dreams she keeps telling me to be careful of a gold halo. I have this dream almost every night. Vilu.”

Dear Vilu: As you should know by now, I am a firm believer in “past lives” and “ghosts”. Despite the lack of “scientific proof”, I feel strongly that the evidence is overwhelming that ghosts exist and that we have all lived before and will live again. Your Aunt may be in that special place where people go waiting to be born again, and she can see things in your aura that you may not be aware of. Clearly, although you never met her, I’d bet that she appears to you in your dreams in far greater detail than any photo you have ever seen of her. Her voice would be totally recognizable to you if you were to hear her speaking. She feels deeply about you as the child of her brother or sister. I strongly suspect that she can see some very significant financial rewards for you in the future, but is trying to warn you about someone interfering with you career. I believe the gold halo represents the financial strength she expects you to attain, and her warning tells you to be careful of someone who may want to take that halo for themselves. While dreams are, usually, not “precognitive” (foreseeing the future in great detail), they can be extremely “intuitive” (foreseeing the future, in general). Your Aunt seems to want to communicate with you. Perhaps a hypno-therapist can help put you into a state where you can actually communicate with her. It has been known to work.

Other Possible Explanations of UFOs

EXPLAINING LIFE’S MYSTERIES August 2, 2009
By Stephen Ellis

Nobody asked me, but…

I’ve been genuinely fascinated with the recently declassified Russian Naval documents concerning UFOs. It has brought about a lot of concern and opened my mind to different thinking. First of all, the Russian military is an absolutely “no-nonsense” organization. When high ranking Russian military officials are suspected of “coloring” reports or trying to make “political gains” from their reports…such individuals tend to quietly disappear.

That’s why their reports need to be respected and given serious consideration. The Russian Navy’s declassified reports (if you read them carefully) are suggesting that the UFO’s we see in our skies are not from another planet or another solar system…but may be from right here on Earth. From beneath our oceans!

My nature is to examine all possibilities…and I believe you should do the same: Without accepting or denying the Russian Navy’s reports, let’s take a moment to examine them versus what most “UFOniks” appear to believe:

Question: Is it more probable that members of some advanced civilization have traversed the incredible vastness of space to locate our planet and visit it…or is it more probable that these objects are actually Earth-bound objects? Bear in mind that approximately seventy percent (70%) of the Earth’s surface has not been explored. Particularly the surface of the Earth beneath our oceans.

Question: Is it more likely that Interplanetary visitors would visit this planet and not attempt communication, or that creatures (or whatever life forms) living at great depths have no means of communicating where atmospheric pressures are as light as on the land surface of the Earth or in our planet’s atmosphere?

Where and why did the story of the lost continent of Atlantis originate? What about Lemuria or Kandam? Were there actually significant land masses and civilizations that submerged and disappeared?

Where and why did the stories of an ancient super-advanced, super high-tech, civilization here on Earth originate? Has anyone ever understood how the Pyramids of Giza not only calculated the value of “Pi” but accurately measured the distance between the Earth and the Moon and the Sun? Or showed the rings of Saturn in some hieroglyphics? Or calculated that there were eight planets in our Solar System long before there were telescopes? What about the unexplained underwater city just off of Bimini Island (a part of the mysterious Bermuda Triangle) or what appears to be an airstrip at Machu Picchu in Peru?

Although credit for the concept of Atlantis goes back to Plato’s writings, I feel reasonably confident that these legends are, minimally, 99% false and are little more than fodder for some science-fiction writers…although I must admit that the extremely high levels of nuclear radiation and ash found in the buried Indian city of Harappa (buried approximately 50,000 years ago) do make me scratch my head in wonder. I’m not suggesting anything other than that there are an awful lot of unanswered questions concerning what life was like here on Earth before history began to be recorded. Advanced, high-tech civilizations are a possibility although there is no credible history to support such thinking.

Let’s make-up a little scenario: Let’s suppose that there is some sort of intelligent life existing in the depths of our oceans. Unlike us, however, they are not humanoid in shape or form, but are more like orbs of energy capable of living beneath the sea and able to visit our atmosphere for limited periods of time. If they were orbs of intelligent energy it would be expected that they could change their shape and may not be able to communicate with humanoid life forms. The appearance of UFOs, based on available photographs, does seem to change…even in flight. This scenario may even suggest an explanation of some of the extremely high number of UFO and orb appearances in Australia recently. One thing appears certain: UFOs tend to prefer areas near deep water.

Of course this is a scenario and has no basis in fact. It might tend to explain some of the massive bursts of energy that seem to emanate from specific parts of our oceans such as the Bermuda Triangle where hundreds of ships and planes have said their instrumentation goes “haywire” at various times. What makes the thought intriguing is that I feel it is so much more likely that UFOs are from somewhere within the Earth rather than from outer space.

Travel at the speed of light is (to the best of our scientific knowledge) a physical impossibility because, at the speed of light, you become “one” with everything… everywhere. But, it might be possible to travel at “half” the speed of light if we ever possess the technology to travel at such unimaginable speeds. But, at half the speed of light, simple arithmetic doesn’t compute: An object that is ten light years away would probably take a thousand Earth years to traverse travelling at half the speed of light; not the simple arithmetic “five” years.

It’s obvious that there are some things out there called UFOs. It’s just that I can’t see some form of life travelling a thousand years to get here and then not even stopping to say “hello”.

A New and Diffrerent Look at UFOs

EXPLAINING LIFE’S MYSTERIES July 25, 2009
By Stephen Ellis

Nobody asked me, but…

Without exception, every article (real or imagined) concerning UFOs has indicated that they are (a) interplanetary spaceships or (b) visitors from another dimension. Until now!

I read an amazing account of highly classified documents from the Russian Navy which have just been de-classified and released. Many of these documents have to deal with UFOs and could, possibly, shed a new and different light as to what they are:

An article reported in phantomsandmonsters.com (a website I highly recommend) contained information strongly suggesting that the point of origin for UFOs is not the sky or outer space…but beneath our oceans!

The Russian Navy declassified its records of encounters with UFOs (and, allegedly, with technology that surpasses any technology known on Earth). The declassified documents were published in the Svobodnaya Pressa news website.

The records dating back to Soviet Union times were compiled by a special navy group collecting reports of unexplained incidents delivered by submarines and military ships. The group was headed by Deputy Navy Commander Admiral Nikolay Smirnov, and the documents reveal numerous cases of possible UFO encounters, the website says.

A former Russian Naval Officer, Vladimir Azhazha, pointed-out that Fifty percent of UFO encounters are connected with oceans. Fifteen percent more – with lakes. He concluded that UFOs tend to stick to areas near the water.

On one occasion a nuclear submarine, which was on a mission in the Pacific Ocean, detected six unknown objects. The submarine tried to outmaneuver the objects without success, and finally surfaced. The report says the objects also surfaced, then took to the air and flew away.

The reports even involve happenings in the mysterious Bermuda Triangle. Retired Russian Rear Admiral Yury Beketov stated that, often, as they passed through the triangle, instruments malfunctioned with no apparent reason or detected strong interference suggesting that there may be some unidentified power source(s) at the great depths of the ocean in the region. Beketov said, “On several occasions the instruments gave readings of material objects moving at incredible speed (below the surface of the ocean). Calculations showed speeds of about 230 knots, or 400 kph… It was like the objects defied the laws of physics…”

Russian Navy intelligence veteran, Captain 1st Rank Igor Barklay, commented:
“Ocean UFOs often show up wherever our or NATO’s fleets concentrate. Near the Bahamas, Bermudas, Puerto Rico. They are most often seen in the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the southern part of the Bermuda Triangle, and also in the Caribbean Sea.”

The declassified Russian documents indicate that another place where people often report UFO encounters is near Russia’s Lake Baikal, the deepest fresh water body in the world. Fishermen tell of powerful lights coming from the deep and objects flying up from the water.

Let’s look at the possibilities: There are still many unexplored parts of our planet Earth. By far, the vastest unexplored regions are beneath our oceans and other bodies of water too deep for our present technology to explore…and let’s not forget that two thirds of the Earth’s surface is water.

Clearly, it is possible that beneath the surface of the water there are things that defy our imagination. It may be part “fantasy” and part “science-fiction” thinking to imagine that there are populated worlds down there…but much of the technology we use today started with “fantasy” and “science-fiction” thinking.

Is it all possible? Certainly! If “pressurized” capsules, large enough to hold a city, were built strongly enough to withstand the enormous pressures of the ocean depths it would be possible for a world, totally different than the one we know, to exist. Would it be possible for such a world to develop their own technology far superior to ours? Of course it’s possible! If their craft were strong enough to withstand the oceans’ pressure, surely it would include the ability to develop craft that could withstand the pressures of our atmosphere and outer space.

I’m not saying that this is so. I’m only suggesting that perhaps we’ve geared our technology to listen for signals from the wrong place. There may be signals coming from the ocean floor…but we’d never know it because all of our high-tech listening devices are aimed to pick up signals coming from outer space.

I’d like to form a group of my readers who are willing to open their minds to new, creative, thinking: A group where we could exchange thoughts and experiences that may be contrary to our accepted books of knowledge...and may help to explain the unexplained. Contact me at stebrel@aol.com.

As I said…nobody asked me.

Different Kinds of Dreams

EXPLAINING LIFE’S MYSTERIES
By Stephen Ellis

Nobody asked me, but…

I’m writing this blog a couple of days early, because my wife and I are going to visit New York for a week. I was born and raised there and I always feel at home when I go back. Actually, California living is so nice-and-easy it tends to allow your batteries to burn down and you become lazy and lethargic. A visit to NYC or Paris or Tel Aviv charges those batteries back up. You can’t even leave the airport in those cities without feeling the electric energy in the air and in the people.
**********************************************************************************
I know I always start my blog with “Nobody asked me, but…”. That’s kind of my trademark. The truth is that a lot of people do ask me about things they don’t understand: about ghosts, about past lives, about astral projection, about hypnosis, about faith healing, about religion, etc. More than anything else, they ask me about dreams. What do their dreams mean? Are they a mirror of a past life or a look into your future? Or are they just a bunch of baloney?

Dreams have many faces and there is much about them that only you can understand: A dream about an Indian Chief could be a look at a past life…or it may be that you were thinking about a John Wayne movie…or it could be that you were planning a trip to Navajo country…or it could be a lot of things. If you sit down with a Psychologist, you may reveal enough about some of your other thoughts so that the Psychologist can see some sort of pattern and maybe help you analyze the dreams.

One thing I do not recommend is buying a book on dreams and trying to apply the generic symbols to your own life. You’ve got two different factors working for you that no outside author can even perceive: Your brain and your mind/aura. If you want to analyze your dreams, they’ve got to be faced in light of what your brain and mind know.

Recently, a cousin of mine wrote me and asked how she could stop dreams about spiders coming down from the ceiling onto her. There is no “set” answer to this. I suggested that since spiders are ugly things that like to hide in dark places, maybe…just maybe…those spiders are representing dark, ugly secrets that have been kept hidden and want to be exposed. Swatting them away does not get to the core of the problem: If my guess is right, she will have to open those ugly secrets to the light of day; talk about them with someone she can confide in.

Was I right? I doubt if I will ever know. I do try and help people analyze their dreams, but there is never a guarantee that I’m even on the right track unless I get to talk with them, in detail, about their dreams and what’s going on in their lives.

The important thing to remember about dreams is that the ones or the parts you do remember have made their way past you mind/aura and into your brain. When you are awake, your brain is in control. When you (and your brain) are asleep, your mind/aura is in control. All of your memory banks are in your brain, so if you remember all or a part of a dream, it means you were either awake or in a very close to waking stage.

One very important exception: Your mind/aura carries the memories of past lives and tries to influence the way you act, thinks, etc. If your mind/aura relates something to you that you find very disturbing…it awakens your brain and your brain puts it into the memory banks. These are called nightmares. You suddenly wake up with a vivid recollection of that dream. Your mind is trying to tell you something…and if you can…try to understand the message.

I remember, when I was six or seven years old, I drew a picture of a boat (in crayons). It was not artistically good, but for several nights…weeks and months thereafter, I had a recurring nightmare about the ship I drew sinking into my crayoned ocean.

Now that I understand how the mind/aura and the brain interact, I realize that, in a previous life, I may have been on a boat that sank. I absolutely love the ocean…but for many years I became a little paranoid when I get out too far from shore. Having analyzed my dream (nightmare) and putting it together with all I have learned. With that understanding of a previous life, I have mastered any lingering fear of the ocean and raced my sailboats through fog so thick that I couldn’t see anything two feet away. I now even prefer to vacation on cruise ships.

There’s one additional aspect to dreams: Taking a peek at the future! In many respects, the lives we have lived in the past are the lives we will live again in the future. Perhaps not with the same name or geographic location, but the style of life will be the same. Dreams may recall a past life memory of growing older or doing certain things that you found pleasing in that life. Although, in your dream, you are not the person living the previous life, but the person living the current life. So, you see yourself as an actor in something which happened before and will, likely, happen again.

I know it’s complicated, but no one ever said that dreams were simple to understand.

If you’ve had some recurring dreams you’d like help with, feel free to write me at stebrel@aol.com and I’ll be happy to offer an opinion as to what they really mean.

As I said…nobody asked me.

Remembering Your Past Life

EXPLAINING LIFE’S MYSTERIES July 12, 2009
By Stephen Ellis

Nobody asked me, but…

I get a lot of e-mail. One question seems to dominate all others: “If we have lived before…why don’t we remember it?”

Actually, that’s one of the most difficult things to explain, because many people do remember. In the case of Shanti Devi (The Indian girl), she not only remembered her previous life, but she remembered it in intricate detail. Most people have memories of things they can’t explain, but the details are very foggy: the déjà vu feelings of having been somewhere before or having known someone before.

Then there was the case of the “Before Mommy” where a four-year-old girl described a previous life in a location she had never been…details of having to go outside to pump water or use the toilet; her family and the people in her life; remembering how and when she died and then going to the “waiting place” to be re-born, etc.

Even more people seem to remember details when they are hypnotized. There are hundreds of certified hypno-therapists in this country that do little else besides drawing past life memories from people.

In fact, I will go so far as to say that there is such an overwhelming amount of evidence of people living past lives that is virtually impossible to refute. We all should sit down and think long and hard about it before dismissing it as so much garbage.

The argument against reincarnation keeps asking for “details”, “details”… ”details” of someone else’s life that could not possibly be known to a complete stranger.

The problem is that even when those details are given, it becomes very difficult to prove them because the details are about someone who has already died. Still, using common sense and logic, how would a six-year-old boy be able to describe the life, the friends, the family and the plane crash that killed someone in World War II?

How can a man who has never been near the ocean describe being on a submarine that was sunk by a Japanese depth charge? In the case of Shanti Devi, how could an eight year old girl who had never been more than a mile from her home in Mumbai (Bombay) show a group of skeptical scientists the intricate route to what she said was her former home in a previous life, miles away….describe birthmarks on her former husband’s body and describe intimate details of their time alone, etc.?

Common sense and logic tell us there must be something to the thousands of verified tales being told by people who remember portions of their former lives.

So then, why doesn’t everyone remember?

Why is it that recollections of a past life (no matter how detailed) seem to come in sporadic memories and seem to fade as people grow older?

Let’s take a moment and go back to a very basic premise: The brain is the body’s computer and the mind/aura is at the keyboard! These days, computers with 50 or 100 gigabyte memory are very common. But it was only a relatively short time ago when the memory of computers was 64 kilobytes…or even one megabyte. When we fed too much information to the older computers, the memory banks could not handle it. Sometimes the computer would crash…and sometimes the computer would give up its old memory to accept the new information being fed to it.

When a child is born, the brain is very undeveloped. Just like a computer with a 64K memory. The mind/aura, however, having lived before is full of information it wants to put into the memory banks of that undeveloped brain.

For the first year or two of life, the brain does not even have the capacity for language. So how can the information the mind/aura wants to feed it be accepted into the brain’s memory banks? Simple. It can’t.

As the human grows, the mind has to learn a new language to feed the brain. Even if the previous life had been in the same area, words and meanings change. Perceptions change. The mind/aura has to learn how to feed the computer brain…but the brain is developing and newly learned things are competing with the old to fill the brain’s limited memory banks. The capacity of the brain’s memory banks is increasing, but not nearly fast enough to keep pace with the demand for the brain’s RAM.

By the time the brain has become fully developed, its memory banks are filled with new things…new language…new perceptions. The memories of the previous life have now had to take a secondary position to the plethora of new information being learned at school and in life generally.

The buried memories can be brought out by different stimuli: A man who drowned in a previous life may have an unexplained fear of water. Someone who died in a plane crash may have an unexplained fear of airplanes. Someone who was financially successful in a previous life may find an unexplained love of banking, finance or some particular business. Etc, etc. etc. Going someplace you visited in a previous life may trigger a memory. Meeting someone you knew in a previous life may trigger a memory.

Hypnotists have little difficulty in pulling up past life memories. And, sometimes, something someone says, or their behavior or your surroundings may bring forth a memory.

I am not preaching any particular religion when I say that there is no need to fear death. You have lived before and will live again. Only your body wears out and dies. Your mind/aura continues to live. Maybe this is what a lot of religions call the immortal soul.

The Same Life...Again

EXPLAINING LIFE’S MYSTERIES July 5, 2009
By Stephen Ellis

Nobody asked me, but…

I received a series of fascinating e-mails from a reader who lives in Kansas. He’s been having dreams for years that he hoped I could explain.

Most dreams are a reflection of the day’s activities or perhaps plans to solve a problem which is coming up. The deeper dreams are recollections from your mind/aura… usually of a past life…and yes, we have all lived before and will live again.

This reader’s dreams had a special significance, because he had overwhelming feelings that he had lived this same life before and was living it again. He had visions of himself aging…and his visions all came to pass to the extent of losing his hair, dental problems, his marriage, etc. The dreams of what would happen were not nearly specific enough to be called precognition (when you can predict what specific thing will happen at what specific time and in what specific place). You’ve probably read the story of a newspaper reporter who had a dream where he saw an airplane crash in the snow: it was so vivid he could read the serial (“N”) number on the wings. A few days later, that plane crashed on a mountain top in Colorado…in the snow. That would be precognition if the story were true.

In this instance, the specifics were missing, so his dreams may be classified as a “premonition” rather than a “precognition”: the feeling that something is going to happen without the specificity. He tells me that the day before Michael Jackson died that he had an overwhelming feeling that someone was going to die that would sadden the world. Premonition?

One of his most fascinating dreams is about his grandmother: For reasons he did not reveal, he never met her…nor even saw a photo of her. Yet, he described her to other members of his family to a tee, even described the place where she lived, the furniture in her bedroom, etc.

His feeling about having lived this same life before brought to mind something that happened to me thirty or so years ago: I had met a man with whom I was doing business and took a strong liking to him. I invited him to join me for lunch. Inasmuch as I had just met the man, our conversation covered a myriad of subjects from politics to business. While I was talking with him, I suddenly got the strangest feeling: I felt certain I had this same conversation with this same person before; to the point where I knew exactly what words were going to come out of his mouth. The strange feeling quickly disappeared, but it made me wonder if any of us are re-living the same life. Since that time, I have spoken to several people who have experienced the same thing, and it opened up a whole new door to the meaning of déjà vu.

Although some readers may not understand what I’m talking about when I discuss dimensions, I firmly believe that other dimensions do exist. Science agrees: In fact quantum physicists studying the “super string theory” of creation now agree that other dimensions exist…other worlds with planets and life forms just like ours. Is it possible that we have lived this same life before in another dimension? Do we have to live and re-live our same lives over again until we reach a certain level of quality and understanding? I have no answer for this, but Socrates believed it to be true. But if this is true, why do we not have memories of a previous life? Why do we seemingly continue to make the same mistakes?
If you’ve ever had the déjà vu of believing you have lived something before…or visited a place before…or had a conversation before…write me and let’s work on this together.

I can offer an explanation to my reader of how he was able to accurate describe a grandmother he never knew or saw: My many blogs on how our mind/aura works could easily have explained how his aura could have visited his grandmother…or her aura visited him. After all, virtually every grandmother loves her grandchildren…even those she hasn’t met…and "love", being one of the most powerful Earthly human forces, could have inspired a visit of her aura to him and left an image in his mind.

Of course, that does not explain the visions my reader had of having lived this same life before; seeing himself aging in detail long before he aged. I believe I am a very intelligent person, but I don’t have all the answers. I have done extensive research into paranormal subjects that have convinced me that we have lived before and will live again. But…is it possible that the life we lived before and the life we live now…and the life we will live again…are the same? Is this world merely a perpetual state?

I get a lot of email from my readers and I read and respond to each and every one. I’d really like your input on this subject. Write me at stebrel@aol.com

As I said…nobody asked me.

The Meaning of Dreams

EXPLAINING LIFE’S MYSTERIES June 28, 2009
By Stephen Ellis

Nobody asked me, but…
This blog is a little bit later than most because my wife and I just returned from a brief vacation in Las Vegas. I went to Vegas to visit my money. It seems so lonely there, I left some more in Vegas to keep it company.

When we got back to Los Angeles, my wife and I had a very interesting conversation about dreams. There is really so little known about them, that it takes a careful analysis just to begin to pierce the surface.

To me, dreams are not only important, but I believe them to be a window to both the past and the future. I’ve spoken with numerous people who have had dreams about a past life or previous existence, including myself. My dream occurred the first time I visited Paris, France, when I dreamed I was at a royal ball. People around me were all dressed as you might see in a movie about Napoleon. I felt strange, so I asked someone near me if they had a looking-glass I could use. A “looking glass”? I’ve never used that term in my life! I was handed one and looked at my reflection and saw a red-haired girl. Inasmuch as I am neither a red-head nor a girl, I found this quite disturbing.

I would have passed-this-off as a weird dream, except that a string quartet in an alcove above the ballroom floor was playing a waltz I had never heard before…but it was clearly a beautiful waltz being played by a quartet of violinists wearing white wigs.

The next day, when I went to visit (tour) that Grand Palace which was across the street from my hotel, we were shown the grand ballroom and it looked like the one in my dream…except there was no musicians’ alcove above the dance floor. So I asked our tour guide if there had ever been one. He said, “Yes, but when the Nazis occupied France, they used the palace as a military headquarters and had the alcove removed.”

Was I getting a glimpse of a past life? I doubt if I will ever know for sure, but it does seem kind of likely. Since that time, I’ve spoken to many people who have had similar experiences, including seeing themselves as a Tibetan Monk, as having been killed by a pack of vicious dogs, as having lived in mountain wilderness, etc., etc., etc.

Inasmuch as having lived before would explain many of these dreams and nothing science has had to offer will even recognize that dreams like this exist, I choose to believe that we have all lived before, and will live again…and dreams can be a window to both events.

It’s important to remember that when we sleep, our brain sleeps (or, perhaps, “rests”). This gives our mind/aura a chance to control our thoughts. Since we have overwhelming evidence that our mind/aura has lived before, why would it be unusual to recall instances or flashes of a previous life while we sleep? The problem is that we can only remember what our brain files-away in its memory banks…and if our brain is sleeping, nothing is being filed-away or permanently recorded. That’s why the only dreams we remember are “disturbing” ones where the disturbing factor partially awakens the brain and files it in our memory banks. But, since the brain is only partially awake, it may rapidly discard the details as the brain awakens fully.

Science has been downright deceptive in telling us that electro encephalographs can tell when we are dreaming and when we are not. When the brain is inactive the encephalograph will measure little or nothing…but that does not mean that the mind is not fully active. How many times have we gone to sleep thinking about major problems…and awakened feeling completely fine? Something took place while we slept. We may not remember anything about the activity of our minds when we slept…but something (a) offered a solution to the problem, (b) put the problem to rest or (c) made us feel better. So there was activity in the mind…even if not in the brain.

Similarly, scientists use REM (Rapid Eye Movement) to tell when we’re dreaming. Again, this is misleading. REM has been tested with people who have been hypnotized and told they are in unusual situation…and there has been no correlation, whatsoever, with REM theories expounded in numerous books.

Most dreams can be explained as a distorted view of the day’s activities or plans/wishes being made for the future. Remember, however, that these are thoughts that occurred when the brain was awake…not sleeping.

Next week, we’ll take a look at the strangest thing of all…pre-cognitive dreams. Dreams wherein you catch a glimpse of the future.
